Eat Out Mexican and Still Lose Weight
The Nutrition Twins comment: You’re not alone if you have felt like you sabotaged your weight loss
efforts when dining at a Mexican restaurant. The enormous portions,
dishes drowning in cheese, and appetizers like nachos (that can cost
you over 1,000 calories can really do some damage.
Have no fear—you actually can eat Mexican food and still lose weight! Here are some options that won’t harm your healthy eating efforts.
Note: Corn, beans (NOT refried with lard), tomatoes, salsa and chilies are all major components of Mexican food—and they’re healthy. Gotta love that!
NT Tip: Always order a side of steamed veggies. Filling up on veggies make it a lot easier to avoid overdoing it—you won’t feel compelled to eat the enormous portion that is served. Use this tip at all restaurants, not only Mexican.
* Eat no more grain (like rice) than the size of your fist.
* Eat no more meat or poultry than the size of your palm.
* Fill up on the veggies (We can never say this too many times!)
Mexican: Good choices:
Appetizers:
• Black bean soup- (hold the sour cream and cheese)
• Gazpacho
• Warm tortillas (not tortilla chips) with salsa
Entrees:
• Chicken, shrimp or veggie fajitas (skip the sour cream and guacamole and ask for extra steamed veggies and salsa)
• Grilled chicken or seafood
• Chicken burritos or soft tacos (made with chicken or fish and tons of veggies)
• Veggie enchiladas (hold the cheese)
• Arroz con pollo (chicken with rice)
Dessert:
• Rice pudding
Enjoy!
